Greek Mythology Of Sagittarius

Sagittarius2Sagittarius the Archer: My take…

Sagittarius is a half human, half horse, known in Greek mythology, as Centaurs.

This creature is featured a lot in Greek mythology, and is always cast as being the obnoxious, drunk, cheating horribly violent creatures.  One, however, was different. Enter the ’special one’,  Chiron. This particular Centaur was educated, kind, thoughtful and gentle. So much so that Chiron became known for his wisdom, and began to teach; imparting his knowledge on all manner of pupils, the mighty Hercules included!

The tale talks of an incident in which Hercules sets about drinking the wine, belonging to the Centaurs. This obviously upset the Centaurs (as it would any man /man-horse) and they began to attack him. Not a smart move…

Hercules, being the demi-god famed for his strength, killed the Centaurs. Banishing the remaining few from the country. Unfortunately, during the battle, Hercules shot Chiron – who had been watching from a distance - with a poison arrow.

Enter King of the Gods, Zeus, who having seen the tragic accident take place, took pity on his son, Hercules, and gave Chiron a resting place among the stars. He placed him within the constellation Sagittarius the Archer.

There are many versions in Greek mythology of Sagittarius. It is also said that while the poison arrow from Hercules did not kill Cheron outright, he did give up his immortality in order to allow mankind to obtain the use of fire.

According to another myth, Sagittarius was sent to kill Scorpio, who in turn had been sent to kill Orion – phew – and that is why the arrow of this constellation points towards the star Antares, or the ‘heart of the scorpion’!

Are you still with me? Wishing it was as simple as being, say, an Aquarius man?

Well I have to say that I could write for hours about the Greek mythology of Sagittarius, I find it quite enthralling. That being said, I know you ladies just want to find out if, being with a Sagittarius man, you are going to have a long and happy marriage, right?

Let me know your thoughts in comments below, and I hope you enjoyed my take on Sagittarius and the Centaurs.
